“One of the best things about doing this event,” says BEF
President, Sheila Burns, “is that it brings together so many willing talents
from our community. From artists to landscapers, store owners, builders, an
electrician, and putting-green expert, everyone has come forward to create something
unique.”
A few details about each hole and the artists involved:
Hole 1 is being
designed by Candice
Crawford, an artist and landscaper from Truro. The title of her hole is The Spirit of The Land Within Us. “When I think of the theme Cape Cod
traditions,” Candice explains, “I immediately visualize the spirit of the land.
How it draws people from all over the world to see this beautiful place in
which we call home. Being of Native American heritage, I connect with the
spirit of the land and that is what brought me here to live.”
The title of Hole 2, designed
by artist Kate Walls is Cape Farming.
Kate is a fine-artist working in a variety of media, and she also illustrates
children’s books. Kate says she choose her theme because “There were many
farms on the Cape long ago. Sadly they were bought out and housing and
stores replaced them. Fortunately, people are now getting back to their
roots and trying to go greener and healthier.”
Boating is the title of Hole 3, created by Meaghann Kenney. Meaghann is an artist who has a
studio on Main Street in Hyannis. In addition to making art and miniature golf
holes, she refinishes furniture for Limelights in South Dennis. More about
Meaghann can be found at www.BREAKDOWNLane.com.
Two graphic
artists, Jim Hill and Dina Lyons have teamed up to create Holed Your Breath! for Hole
4. By
day Jim Hill works with businesses to improve their branding, online presence
and social media profile. By night he is a children’s writer/illustrator out to
make you laugh until milk comes out of your nose.
Dina Lyons is a graphic designer who specializes in graphic
identities, branding and advertising. In addition to professional and volunteer work, Dina and her husband have two children in the Barnstable Public Schools. This is Jim and Dina’s second year as
hole designers for the B.E.F. “This year we wanted to create a hole that would
be really engaging to children,” Dina says, “and also pay tribute to our marine
life. Enter through the sandcastle and visit our undersea world.”
Situated at the back of the course, Hole 5 is a medley of architectural elements. Titled The Village Green and led by team
leader Mary-Ann Agresti, AIA, of The Design Initiative in Hyannis, this large
display was constructed by the Boston Society of Architects using warehouse
space donated by Shepley Wood Products.
The Boston Society of Architects says that, “Through the
promotion of quality design, we are dedicated to creating a unified vision to
guide the responsible development of our region. We aim to provide
opportunities for professional development through advocacy and community outreach.”
Through this miniature golf hole that was inspired by a town green, these
professionals have reached out to adults and children alike.
Hole 6 celebrates the
Hyannis Youth & Community Center that opened in the fall of 2009. Team
leader Amy Harwood says that the mission of the HYCC is “to provide
state-of-the-art accessible facilities for a variety of recreational program
and special events.” The hole décor was created by adults and children, and
exemplifies the spirit of “teamwork, instruction and the development of skills”
that the HYCC is dedicated to.
The Cotuit Center for
the Arts lent several of its employees for the construction of Hole 7, and they prefer to be known by
first names only. Erin, Patrick and Jamie hope that all who see the Strokes of
Genius mini-golf event will visit www.CotuitCenterfortheArts.org
and come see the genius that goes on at this Cape Cod treasure every day.
Hole 8, The Cape Cod Baseball League, was
designed and built by Priscilla Merritt who is a Special Education Teaching
Assistant in the Barnstable Public Schools. She choose the theme of the Cape Cod Baseball League because she
is a huge baseball fan and considers the CCBL a true Cape Cod treasure.
Priscilla is on the Board of Directors for the Hyannis Athletic
Association and a host parent for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks.
The last hole on the
course, Hole 9, is titled Sea Shells and was made by Jennifer
Villa. The owner of Little Beach Gallery in Hyannis, Jennifer is thrilled to
represent over 35 local artists who like herself are continually inspired by
the beautiful waters of Cape Cod.
